University Courses I would be interested in

University Courses I would be interested in.

Universities I would be interested in going to.

While I've never shown much desire to go to university, I have always thought if I would end up going that it would be somewhere closer to home, as to avoid too much travel costs to add to the any other University costs.

Gap Year Research: Journalism Placement in Mexico

Gap Year Research: Journalism Placement in Mexico

Journalism placements in Mexico

Our journalism placements in Mexico are based at various newspapers, TV stations, radio stations and websites. Our placements are tailored to your experience, interests and level of Spanish. For those with basic or no Spanish you will be working on publications and websites serving the English speaking populations of Puerto Vallarta or Guadalajara.

Both have sizeable populations of English speaking expatriates, mainly from the USA, as well as a large seasonal population of tourists. A large amount of media is dedicated to serving this population. Therefore, the topics covered are wide ranging.

The focus of the media varies, mainly focussing on local activities and issues. However, the media also covers culture & history, economics, health & science, sports, as well as national and international current affairs. Therefore your experience here will be diverse and wide-ranging, with lots of hands-on work.

Requirements:

This is a serious work experience programme and applicants must be able to demonstrate a very real interest in following a career in media. The publication will expect you to contribute ideas and make suggestions rather than sit around and just make the tea.

Even when working on English language publications, a basic understanding of Spanish is essential as the people you will be working with and possibly interviewing may not speak English.

Gap Year Research: Work Experience in Bejing

Photojournalism Work Experience in Bejing

Project Overview:

You will work as a Photojournalist for a Magazine, taking your own photos and choosing stock photos to go with the articles about Chinese Culture. We also run journalism, graphic design and events management projects at the magazine, so if you have skills/interest in both areas please make this clear, as the magazine can be flexible about the type of work offered and you are welcome to combine interests.

On your first day you will be taken in by one of the Travellers Staff Members in Beijing, and introduced to the staff at the Magazine, on this day you will also meet your supervisor. Communication should be no problem with your supervisor, or your fellow staff members as many at the office speak good English. You will usually work from around 9:30 until 5:00pm with an hour to lunch, but this can be subject to change.

You will be working both individually and as part of the team. The post, as with all work in such fields, will respond to the amount of energy you put in. If you are enthusiastic and offer a professional manner then you will be rewarded by being given better and better opportunities.

The magazine you will work at publishes a variety of articles about Chinese Culture. Its aim is to introduce Ex-Pats to China while educating, informing and entertaining. The magazine features articles on travel, Chinese culture, food, modern life, language, art, business and more. The magazine covers a massive range of things and is a very interesting read – if you’re interested in getting under the skin of Chinese Culture, you’ll love it.

Why I think this would be suitable for me if I were to take a gap year:

While I've never really thought about taking a gap year to go travelling and do some work experience or the like, if I were to, I think this would be suitable for me as I am very interested in photography and also always liked the idea of working for a magazine, so I feel this trip would help give me adequate experience in this area. As well as that, travelling to a completely different place would help me experience different cultures and be able to see a different way of life than to what I am used too.

Freelance Photographer

What qualifications, training, and skills would you need to become a Freelance Photographer?

In Freelance Photography, qualifications aren't essential, but can be very helpful in helping a future freelance photographer learn the techniques needed. A college course in Art or Media or Photography by itself are generally good courses to go for. Other than that, reading books, websites etc about camera techniques is a good way to learn also.

What qualities would make a good Freelance Photographer?

A successful freelancer needs to be comfortable in a leadership role, in this type of job, you're your own boss, so you also need to be comfortable having to make decisions about things. A freelance photographer also needs to be self-motivated, as said before, this job means being your own boss, which means telling yourself what you need to do and when you need to do it by and motivating yourself to do it by when you need it done by.

How much can you expect to earn being a Freelance Photographer?

As a Freelance Photographer, the amount of money earned can be extremely varied. You could earn as little as £20 per shot, or as much as £1000's + per set of shots, depending on the type of shots you've taken of course, e.g a tabloid photographer could get more earnings than say a wedding photographer because generally media outlets will pay for good images that will make good stories. So basically, the earning can be extremely differing.

UCAS Stamford Test

For my first try on taking the Stamford Test, it came up inconclusive and suggested that I should take the test again and respond with more positive response on any I might feel unsure on as to try and get a result from the Test.

The second time I took the Stamford Test, I responded more positively and this time I managed to get some results from it, these results did reflect the courses I would be interested in if I were to go to University.
